HND views capacity building as an effort to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of nonprofit organizations. Our notion of capacity building focuses on providing technical assistance, training, financial assistance and/or resources, and consultation to Hmong and non-Hmong organizations to improve their effectiveness in service, program, and mission delivery. HND believes that organizations can reach their mission and vision if given the proper support and guidance most appropriate to their organizational life stage. HND strengthens the Hmong community nationally by building the capacity of local Hmong organizations to better serve and meet the needs of Hmong communities across the country. COMMUNITY STRENGTHENING PROGRAM The Community Strengthening Program provides resources, technical assistance, and training to organizations and individuals to meet the needs of their local Hmong American community. As the needs of the Hmong community changes it is critical that Hmong organizations also assess the changes and provide services that meet those needs. Helping Hmong Mutual Assistance Agencies (HMAAs) sustain themselves in order to provide their local constituency with lasting social benefits is the main purpose of this Program. Community Strengthening Program Objectives:
TECHNOLOGY INITIATIVE HND has also launched a Technology Initiative to begin addressing the gap in technology use for Hmong nonprofits. For the Hmong Poultry Project (previously referred to as the Risk Management Education Project), HND provides workshops and individual technical assistance to Hmong poultry farmers and advocates in the Ozark regions of Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri to increase their knowledge of production management and financial risks of contract poultry production. The Hmong Poultry Project also works to reduce the likelihood of a Hmong poultry farming experiencing bankruptcy or severe financial stress by educating them about cash flow projections, how depreciation and interest change their profitability from the beginning to the end of the production contract, how to meet the terms of contracts so their barns remain full, and how to meet quality and quantity terms to minimized financial penalties and maximize bonuses.
