As the only national Hmong organization in Washington, DC, HND strengthens community by hosting an annual Hmong National Conference (HNC) that brings together Hmong individuals from all professions and background to learn and discuss the community’s challenges as well as to celebrate the community’s accomplishments. The United States is currently home to over 300,000 Hmong. The State of Wisconsin houses the third largest Hmong population with an estimated total population of 33,791. Unlike California and Minnesota where the Hmong are highly centralized in one region of the state, the Hmong communities of Wisconsin are dispersed throughout rural communities with a population of 2,957 Hmong in Brown County; 2,706 Hmong in Sheboygan County; 2,504 Hmong in Outagamie County; 2,282 Hmong in La Crosse County; and 2,235 Hmong in Dane County. Though the Hmong have made great strides over the past three decades yet there are still many who face challenges in rising out of poverty and being economically empowered in the United States. The Hmong National Conference was created to serve as a national platform for community members to discuss and strategize solutions to meet the trend of challenges faced by the national Hmong American community. Since the first conference in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1995, the Hmong National Conference has consistently provided educational, skill building and networking opportunities for professionals, scholars, community members, youth, and leaders to increase capacity, promote active civic participation, discuss community challenges, and celebrate successes. By providing practical knowledge, skills and tools, the conference strengthens the ability of attendees to address socio-economic problems faced by their respective communities. |
